Top 10 Lists…Video Style

Some of you may remember the Late Show with Dave Letterman! One of his regular features included his infamous top 10 lists in descending order from 10 to 1, adding his own a touch of humor and sarcasm as he shared! I have been using written top 10 lists for years and was excited when Matt Miller of Ditch That Textbook shared his version utilizing Flipgrid. This Top 10 Lists…Video Style post shares how to present the lists via Flipgrid with some of ideas for topics. Help add to the list by sharing additional topics!

Background Info

  • You may need or want to familiarize yourself or your students with Dave Letterman and his top ten lists. Here’s one example from an episode of The Show with David Letterman.
  • As you can see from the example, top ten lists can have elements of humor and sarcasm. However, for school, the lists should be truthful. The lists are generally made up of short, concise statements, and use contempory, informal language.

Procedures

  • Provide your students with the topic you’d like them to curate a list for. Topics can be random or they can be based on specific articles, videos or textbooks (see attachment below). Also, the list doesn’t have to be ten. It can be a list of 5 or some other random number.
  • Ask students to brainstorm a list that befits the topic. From there, students must think critically as they select the best ideas for their final list, justifying their selections as they whittle it down.
  • Once lists are finalized, students use Flipgrid to create their videos. As students are presenting their lists, they also include brief explanations or summaries of their selections. They can even add props if desired.
  • A new feature Flipgrid added is text boxes. Students can peer edit or comment on each other’s lists before lists are recorded or after. You can check it out in this Flipgrid blog.
  • Top 10 Lists can be invidually created and/or small group. Students could indiviually brainstorm their lists and then revise and edit in small groups. If students are creating their lists in groups, assign so many to each student to make up the required amount.
