Exploring Salads

There’s a lot of components when teaching about salads! Use this Exploring Salads hyper-slide to help your students navigate through a variety of resources to learn more about salads and work their way into the kitchens in order to prepare all types of salads!

Set

  • Put students into small groups and give them paper to complete the “Cover the Table” intro activity using SALADS as your topic. This activity, not only engages students immediately, but it helps you to know what they know about a particular subject.
  • After students share their knowledge of salads, explain to them that they will be learning all about salads!

Materials

  • iPads or Laptops
  • Projector & Screen
  • Colored Pencils
  • Salad Spinners (optional–affiliate link)

Activities

  • Send out the Exploring Salad Slide to all of your students using Google Classroom or whatever platform your school uses. Everything students need to work on is hyperlinked on the slide so all they have to do is click on it and it takes them to the information and resources needed to independently work through the information.
  • Once students have completed their notes and activities, go over some or all as a class or collect and grade all or certain parts.
  • Students then prepare some salads in class. I’m including some recipes I’ve had success with, but you can certainly swap them out for others depending on your class time and resources. Labs include: Chopped Salad with Struggle Meals Video & Prompts, Fruit Salad, Spaghetti Salad Chicken Bowl and Cranberry Jello Salad (both are family favorites).
  • When serving salads, you could observe their manners when eating to see if they can apply the etiquette tips learned.
  • Optional: Assign students the Salads Illustrated Recipe Assignment to review and apply information they’ve learned about salads. Salads could be selected by students or randomly assigned.
