Pop Culture Baking Mix Project

The Pop Culture Baking Mix Project was inspired by the Bridgerton Baking Mixes offered from Betty Crocker!  I thought it was such a cool idea and thought of a ton of television and movies that teens might be inspired to create baking mixes for that I created this project for use in many classes from foods to marketing. So, have a look and hope you’re inspired as well!

Set

  • Ask students how many of them have received products or toys inspired by television shows or movies. Most have probably received a Lego set, game, t-shirt, stuffed animal, puzzle, mug, POP character/bobble head, etc. at one time or another in their childhood or at least have seen a commercial for them.
  • Ask students how many of them have ever eaten a food product inspired by television shows or movies. Again, most probably have eaten a cereal, fruit chews, and/or macaroni and cheese at one time or another in their childhood or at least have seen a commercial for them.
  • Explain to students they will be doing something similar with a baking mix. Show them the baking mixes from Betty Crocker that were inspired by the Netflix series titled, Bridgerton.
  • In small groups, have students brainstorm television shows and movies they are familiar with, that are school appropriate to work with. You could give them a list of genres, if needed, to help inspire them.  Create a master list on the board or screen.

Materials

  • iPad or Laptop
  • Projector & Screen
  • Colored Markers and/or Pencils
  • White Construction Paper
  • Canva (optional)

Activities

  • Now that students have a working list of television shows and movies, go over the Pop Culture Baking Project guide sheet with them. Explain that they will be creating a baking mix for a baked good inspired by their chosen show or movie. Note: For the purpose of this lesson, students will not be preparing their invented mix. However, if you have an advanced culinary class, this could certainly be done.
  • Provide students with art materials to work with to create the product design/packaging of their new mix. I’m choosing to do this part by hand, however, this could easily be computer generated.
  • After students have created their new product, they must figure how how they will market it with name, brand, colors, slogans, etc. Once that is done, students will create an Instagram post using the Ditch That Textbook template or Canva template and inserting a picture of their hand generated product.
  • Students will then share and pitch their new baking mix to the class. The audience will be judging new baking mix products in a variety of categories.
  • Survey students after all presentations are done to see who won each category. You could create a bulletin board or wall display of all winning mixes with their corresponding categories. Or, you could display all of the designs created by your students.
