The 6-1 Grocery Shopping Method is a simple, effective way to ensure balanced and nutritious meals while managing your budget, especially with rising food prices! Read on to see how you can use this to your students.
Set
- Write 6-1 Grocery Shopping Method on the board. Place students into small groups and ask them what they think the 6-1 method is made up of. Give them a time limit to brainstorm the six things. When the time is up, have each group share their ideas.
- Chances are pretty high that students will have no idea of what the 6-1 method consists of so this is a great time to have them explore and learn more about it.
Materials
- iPads or Laptops
- Projector & Screen
- Grocery Store Circulars/Flyers
- Online Recipes or Cookbooks
Activities
- To help students learn more about this grocery shopping method, individually or as a class view the YouTube, Good Morning America clip on the strategy. As students view, have them complete the corresponding prompts.
- After going over the answers and making sure students understand the strategy and benefits, assign them a scenario/case study to work through. There is one for a college age student and one for a family of four. You can choose whether you want students to complete the project individually or as a group.
- In either project, students shop for food using the grocery store sale circular, and the 6-1 grocery strategy while staying within a certain budget. Students then use the foods they selected to create a 5 day menu for their person or family.
- After selections, budgets and menus are completed, pull the class together to share and discuss their reflections, challenges, menus, etc.
- Options:
- If you want to make this a competition or you gamify your course, see who can spend the least amount of money to accomplish the task. You can assign badges or points to the top 3 or set it up to your gamification guidelines.
- You could also have students select a meal from their menu to actually prepare for the class.
- Finally, to mix things up, you can set parameters to make the shopping and menu planning more challenging by giving them dietary restrictions such as the person or family is vegan or gluten and/or dairy free, lactose intolerant, etc.
