Sometimes when teaching about sensitive topics, it helps to have a scenario or case study to work with. This Teen Pregnancy Scenario, will provide you with just that along with some related follow-up activities. Continue reading to learn more…
Set
- Ask students what it means to take something to the next level using a variety of contexts: school, sports, jobs and relationships.
- Ask students what the positive and negative consequences might be to taking the above context topics to the next level. Have them brainstorm some examples of each with their shoulder neighbor and be prepared to share with the class.
- Ask students if they’ve ever felt pressured to do something they weren’t sure they wanted to do, especially if it involved going to the next level. They do not need to share what the pressure situation was, but ask them how being pressured made them feel. Some feelings associated with being pressured may include: anxiety, stress, lack of control, guilt, fear, left out just to name a few.
- Ask students if those feelings associated with being/feeling pressured made them stay strong and say “NO” or wore them down to the point they gave in and said “YES”.

- iPads or Laptops

Activities
- Tell students they will watch a video about two girls in high school who end up in similar situations and how each handles it. Show them the YouTube video titled, Teen Pregnancy & Toothpaste and ask them to focus on each girls’ relationship.
- After watching the video, ask students to work with their partner or small group to discuss each of the relationships featured in the video. As they discuss, have them individually complete the digital, Drag & Drop Venn Diagram.
- Use their diagrams to discuss each girl and the relationship they were in. Focus on the differences of each relationship, but be sure to talk about the similarities as well.
- Following the discussion, assign students the Cristina and Bobby Analysis to complete individually from the Dibble Institute. Bring the class together to have a full discussion on the answers they came up with in the analysis. You should get some good discussion on this. I know my students always had a lot to say on the subject!
- Finally, talk about refusal skills associated with pressure lines from Alberta Health Services. Place students into small groups, assigning one scenario to each group. I never had students actually perform the “role plays” as I thought they would be a bit awkward. However, they did brainstorm responses and answers to the prompts associated with each before sharing and discussing each as a whole group.
