Instead of just teaching an overview of the family life cycle stages, I started teaching it in more depth and exploring some topical issues faced in stage. When I got to the launching stage, I wanted the focus to be on something fun so I assigned my students the “Plan a Winter Ski Trip–Budget Project“. This is an engaging project that could be adapted and taught in many classes. I selected a ski getaway as there are many ski options within a 3 hour drive of our location. However, if skiing is not an option where you live, adapt it to an activity, sport or event that is.
Set
- Teach or review what is happening in the launching stage of the family life cycle with students beforehand. I really like to focus on the positive things that can happen in this stage such as the fact that you are now empty nesters and have time to focus on strengthening your relationship with your spouse, doing things you both enjoy or exploring new hobbies and activities while your health still permits.
- Share with students that they are about to become knowledgeable in planning a getaway trip for two!
Materials
- iPads or Laptops
- Projector & Screen (optional)
Activities
- NOTE: You may need to change/adapt the state you are from and/or ski options prior to assigning this project if you do not live in Pennsylvania. Also, I did not assign a budgeted dollar amount. However, this is something you could add if desired.
- Before letting students begin planning their trip, go over the assignment. It may be helpful to project it on the screen so students can see what you are referring to.
- Because adults in this stage of life often have some health issues, I included some heart issues in the project when thinking about food/dining options.
- As students plan and make choices, they fill in the provided tables/charts on the project sheet, keeping track of the dollars spent and then hyperlink their sources.
- When the trip is totally planned, students add up totals and complete the exit prompts.
- Conclude by discussing the amounts spent, the challenges faced and what they would adjust if budget changed.
