If you teach a child development, parenting or family class and need to incorporate a financial component, then this Baby Layette project may be just what you are looking for! Not only do students learn what a baby layette is, but they also must put one together following a variety of budget ranges. Read on to learn more…
Set
- Introduce students to the term “layette” by playing build a flower or snowman game which is similar to the old hangman game. I just used my chalk board to create the game and whipped around the room asking students to give me a consonant only. If correct, I fill in the blank and students have an opportunity to guess the word. If the letter does not fit, then I build the flower or snowman. Once all consonants are guessed, then vowels may be given. The object is for students to guess the word before I finish the flower or snowman. If you wish to go the digital route, then you can always create it using Flippity Word Game.
- Once the word is revealed, students are given a notes sheet and directed to stations that are set up around the room for them to learn more–see attachments.
- After students have finished their notes, briefly go over the information before assigning the project.
Materials
- iPads or Laptops
- Projector & Screen
- Pink & Blue Marbles (affiliate link) optional
- Blue & Pink Ring Pops (affiliate link) optional
Activities
- Go over the assignment “Create a Newborn (0-3 months) Layette 3 Ways Project” so students understand what they are to be doing.
- Before students begin, randomly assign them a gender to work with. You can do this by flipping a coin (heads=girl and tails=boy), creating a random wheel generator set up with boy and girl only or buy blue and pink marbles or candy and place in a bag for students to randomly select. If you use marbles, just recollect, wash and store for future use if you plan to use the project again. Choose the option that works best for your class and budget!
- Once students know the gender they are working with, they begin to plan out their layout using the provided template. They must plan it three ways based on their notes and various budget ranges.
- When finished, they must complete the reflection prompt, sharing their favorite layette.
- As a concluding activity to get them thinking about other ways to save money when putting a layette together, assign the Ways to save money on a layette without sacrificing quality Flash Slide for them to complete and share with the class.
