Claims made on foods can be very confusing to adults let alone students! In this Nutrition & Health Claims lesson, students learn the differences between the two
in a variety of ways.
Set
- Begin with the Bell Ringer titled, Nutritious or Not? Have students share their responses and reasoning. This slide can be put into Google Classroom or you can have students answer on whiteboards or sticky notes, diving your wall or chalkboard into two sections: Nutritious & NOT.
- Show students this video titled, “All-Natural, Non-GMO, 100% Gluten-Free Internet Video!” to show how companies may be skirting the truth about foods. As they view, have them complete the corresponding video prompts.
- Discuss the video and their answers as a class.
- Finally, have students explore the differences between nutrition and health claims by answering the questions using the web-resource titled, Nutrition Claims and Health Claims are the same, right? WRONG!
Materials
- iPads or Laptops
- Projector & Screen
- White Boards & Markers
Directions
- Now that students know the difference between the two claims, it’s time to reinforce and review the information. This can be done in a couple of difference ways.
- The first way is to have them participate in the Name That Claim activity. This can be done as a worksheet, but if you’d like to get your students up and moving around, I would cut the examples apart and scatter them around the room. Students can write their answers on a piece of composition paper and you could go over them as a class. If you are in need of the answers, send me an email (kim@familyconsumersciences.com).
- The second option is to do a White Board Relay Race in small groups of four determining if the claims are nutrition or healh based. If you need a tutorial on how to do this, here is a video from Edutopia demonstrating the game.
- Finally, as a review, reinforcement or assessment, have students complete the Magic Square Activity based on the claims they just learned about. If you need the key, please feel free to email me.
