Fall is the perfect time to teach about apples because they’re in prime season, making them abundant and inexpensive! This post includes an Apples Hyperdoc & Dutch Apple Pudding Lab. So after students have learned about apples and you want a tasty, easy to make dessert, then the Dutch Apple Pudding Lab will be right up your alley!
- Play the “Elimination” game with students as a way to see how many varieties of apples they are familiar with. To do this give each student a white board or a blank piece of paper and set the timer for 3-5 minutes. Ask them to write down as many varieties of apples as they can in that time frame.
- When the time is up, go around and have students share a variety. If the variety is on anyone else’s list, students draw a line through it. If the variety is unique to their list only, they get a point.
- After all varieties are shared, the person with the most points wins! What do they win you ask? An apple, of course!

- Assign students the Apples Hyperdoc to complete in class. This can take about 1-2 days depending on how long the elimination intro activity took and how quickly your students work.
- I take a period to go over some of the answers and grade others. Students don’t know which I’ll go over or which will be graded so they need to complete all of it. Also, I do keep tabs on their progress in Google Classroom as they are working.
- We then go over the pre-lab questions (on the hyperdoc ) and complete the lab sheet for prep and clean-up jobs prior to the actual lab day.
- Because my periods are 43 minutes long, this is a make/bake one day, eat the next type of lab.
- The beauty of this recipe is that it can be eaten warm or cold! It can be topped with whipped cream or ice cream or even eaten plain! It’s delicious all ways! It’s also a great summer treat with peaches subbing in for the apples!
- If you have time, this would be a great opportunity to teach students how to make homemade whipped cream! If time does not permit, the canned or frozen versions work just as well!
- This recipe is definitely “tried and true” as I’ve been preparing it since my junior year of high school where I was introduced to it in my foods class….and that was 40 years ago! (But hey, who’s counting?!)
