This is a great lab for students to apply food safety skills in the kitchen with or without living and teaching in the world of COVID-19! I have included a possible way to do this lab as an interactive class demonstration, especially if you have some lab restrictions. If times were normal, this recipe is still doable as a class demo or as individual group preparation (just adjust the recipe accordingly). I’ve always struggled with how to teach about the role of government agencies in safeguarding our food supply in a way that students could understand. Then I happened upon an article in our local paper from our extension agency that made it so much easier. The article was titled “Anatomy of a Food Recall” and really broke the information down. I decided to make it into a virtual learning assignment. Recently, I participated in a webinar on this topic and had been wanting to incorporate it into my foods classes when teaching about or reinforcing food safety practices. The safe recipe style guide assignment can be used as a normal assignment even when classes aren’t virtual. So, check it out and see if you can add it to your remote learning lesson file!
You might wonder why I have so many lessons and/or activities for the same topic. The truth is I teach three different classes where I need to cover “food safety” before I let students go into the lab/kitchen. I don’t want to do the same thing in each of those classes because many of my students I see again for other electives, hence, the need for variety! Even if you don’t teach multiple courses like I do, you may just want to shake up your own lesson or add this Food Safety: Web-Activity & Review to your arsenal of resources for future use!
I think I love breakout activities almost as much as my students do! So, I thought I’d try my hand at another one, using it as a way for students to acquire their notes regarding food safety actions. In this breakout, students must put the puzzles together that form their notes, complete the notes form and scan for a number to help them eventually open their box. In this breakout, only one box per group is used and within it contains a scenarios activity that utilizes the notes students just spent time obtaining. The boxes also contain a small treat that students may eat while completing their scenario assignment. How do you use breakouts in the classroom?
