Do you include expiration dates when teaching about food label literacy? If not, maybe you should consider adding it to your unit as there is alot of information about
expiration dates than you might realize. Because of this, I’ve created some interactive resources around Expiration Dates to help your students learn more!
Set
- Show students the intro slide titled, “Would you eat this?” and have students share their responses and reasons.
- Ask student if dates on products are important and why. Ask students why manufacturers add them to food products.
- Explain that they will be learning more about expiration dates and why they are important.
- Show students the Ted Ed video titled, “The Truth About Expired Food” and have students complete the guide sheet as they view it. Go over the answers as a class.
- Student will use their notes to complete the “Use By/Sell By T-Chart Wordle” assignment and then turn that in for a grade.
Materials
- iPad or Laptop
- Projector & Screen
Activities
- To help students learn more about why expirations dates are important, set up the Digital Breakout activity by cutting apart the clues and laying them out around the room in random order.
- Students will visit each clue in any order and record their answer on their clue form. The link to the notes is available to them to reference at any time along the way if needed.
- Once students have all of their answers recorded, they will go to the linked Google form and add their breakout code. If the code is entered correctly, students will “breakout” and if the code is entered incorrectly, students must go back to the clues and re-evaluate their answers.
- As always, if you need the breakout code, just email me and I will gladly share it with you. My email is kim@familyconsumersciences.com
