You may be familiar with using one pagers as a way for students to concisely summarize key takeaways from readings or videos. However, Recipe One Pagers
can also be used in a food class. I had so much fun collaborating with Lindsey Harlan from Arkansas to share some “punny” ideas with you in ready to use recipe one pagers. Read on to learn more!
Option #1
- We took some ordinary foods that one might assign their students to prepare in the lab when teaching about the topic and we let our creative juices flow, by coming up with colorful, “punny” titles and six different recipes for students to choose from.
- These one pagers can be printed on the front and back of paper and then laminated for use in the lab. They give students recipe options to choose from which can be randomly assigned or selected by students. Because they are laminated, you can use them repeatedly and save trees in the process!
- For more advanced students or higher level culinary classes, use these one pagers as a base recipe. Then let the students create their own blends or mixes to elevate the creativity and learning.

Option #2
- Recipe one pagers can also be used as an assessment where students show what they’ve learned by creating their own recipe(s) on one page. These can be digitally generated or hand generated after students have created their products.
- When we were discussing ideas for this post, one topic came to mind for both of us. If you teach a lesson or unit on salads, having students use a base recipe to create original creamy and vinaigrette dressings is a great hands-on authentic assessment. They show you what they know by “doing” or in this case “preparing” a dressing and then creating a “Punny” Recipe One Pager to share their new creation with others using the provided criteria and template. Students can also sample each other’s dressings and vote on a favorite.
