During COVID-19, April Dull of Pennsylvania presented a webinar: “Using Canva to Inspire Students to Think and Express Themselves Creatively”. After participating in her presentation where the cross stitch unit was introduced, I knew I had to feature April on the website! Read on to see how a cross stitch unit was taught virtually to her students. While this unit was taught E-learning style, it can be used within a traditional or blended classroom.
Set
- Initially, students were surveyed to see if they would be interested in completing a cross-stitch and embroidery project and they were!
- April made up baggies for porch and apartment drops which included: Several pieces of Aida Cloth (affiliate link), a small embroidery hoop (affiliate link) and medium size embroidery hoop (affiliate link), a cross-stitch size needle and embroidery needle (affiliate link), and a variety of floss colors (affiliate link) and also cloth for embroidery (affiliate link). Depending on your resources, a beginner kit (affiliate link) of supplies may also be an option.
Materials
- Laptop or iPad
- Canva
- Stitch Fiddle
- Cross Stitch & Embroider Supplies (see list above)
Activities
- Because this was asynchronous instruction, April made videos and lessons teaching students the tools & equipment, as well as how to cross-stitch and uploaded them to Google Classroom (everything was done virtually). The videos and hyperdoc can be found in the attachments below.
- Students had to stitch an alphabet letter to demonstrate they knew how to complete the stitch before they did this project.
- They uploaded pictures of everything to Google Classroom including their designs, charts, and finished projects.
- The students really enjoyed it and April will definitely have students complete this project again whether it’s virtually or live in the classroom.
- Previously, students were able choose ANY design they wanted and had some really interesting choices ranging from Beyonce song lyrics, emoji’s, and even a picture of Cardi B. Those choices were always pre-made charts April purchased from Etsy so she will definitely have students start to make their own designs from now on.
- Students will create their own designs in Canva and then upload them to Stitch Fiddle where a cross stitch chart is generated. The ideas are endless!
- While in isolation, April also created a website and a TPT store where you can find more of her ideas!
