Finance Facts Analysis

I know many of you who teach financial literacy utilize the Next Gen Personal Finance resources. The Financial Facts Analysis is an activity I created that utilizes their customizable posters which are free if you have an account with them (also free). It’s a great activity to use at the begining of the course to introduce students to a variety of financial statistics as well as getting them acclimated to working in small groups, collaborating and communicating with one another.

Teacher Prep

  • Print each financial statistic on individual cards or sheets. Laminate for durability if you plan to use them in multiple classes. These can be found by searching “posters” on the NGPF website.
  • Create two categories on a whiteboard, chalkboard or large poster paper
    • Why Does This Matter?
    • What Can Be Done?
  • Prepare markers and/or sticky notes for student input.

Materials

  • Laminated Stat Cards (free from NGPF)
  • Poster Paper
  • Markers
  • Sticky Notes

Instructions

  • Briefly discuss the importance of financial literacy. Use one or two statistics to spark conversation.
  • Divide students into small groups and give each group 2–3 statistic cards.
  • Groups will:
    • Analyze their assigned statistics.
    • Write why the statistic matters under the first category.
    • Suggest actionable strategies to address the issue under the second category.
  • Have groups present their statistics and explanations to the class. Audience can share additional ideas or perspectives.
  • Creative Extension: Each group creates a poster summarizing one statistic, why it matters, and their proposed solutions. Posters can be displayed around the room or school.
  • Finally, have students complete the Exit Prompts before leaving class:
    • Which statistic surprised you the most? Why?
    • What actions can you personally take to improve financial outcomes for yourself or your family?
    • How can schools better support students in financial education?
