Careers in the Food Industry

The food industry contains many careers for individuals to investigate and pursue. However, many careers are unfamiliar and go unnoticed. There are more jobs in the food industry than you would imagine! Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify characteristics and skills for a career in the culinary field.
  • Students will be able to research educational requirements for a career in the culinary field.

Time Frame & Class Size

  • Time Frame: 3-5 Periods
  • Class Size: 25

Materials

  • Laptop, iPad or Computer
  • Internet Access
  • Projector/Smart Board
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Planning Sheet

Instructional Procedures

  • Introduce the topic of researching food careers and go over the details of the project planning guide and rubric in case students have questions.
  • Facilitate the choosing of careers to ensure that there are no repeats of the same career, unless that is desired. Note: While this is an independent project, it could also be a group assignment…your call.
  • While students work, walk around to provide assistance as necessary.
  • Since students will be presenting their careers to the class, coordinate dates and times for their presentations. Remind them to review the rubric for criteria as they are being assessed on their presentations.
  • After completing the presentations, highlight key details in each presentation. Additionally, the teacher may  highlight details about other culinary journeys not mentioned.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

  • There are several opportunities for presenting learning knowledge in this project. Students can choose what best fits them. Also, there are resources already available for ready use in case students struggle with researching. In addition, the teacher can facilitate or teach how to research as part of the introduction to this project.
