Teaching the elements and principles of design gets monotonous. There are always the traditional standbys like having students find a magazine picture and label the elements and principles, but I was looking for something more creative. With the holiday season in full swing I wanted to make a gingerbread house for a friend so I decided to make the inside of a gingerbread house using the elements and principles of design. Not into the whole gingerbread thing? The same idea can be used to create a diorama out of a shoe box and it will save you the time baking.

Comparison Food Shopping: Buying Groceries for Two People for One Week
Basically this lesson is a challenge for students to make nutritious meals using the food guide pyramid for $60 a week and to find all their pricing and food choices from local grocery store fliers. The students would cut out what they wanted to purchase and paste them on a food pyramid chart for each meal. The students would then total the amount of dollars spent and estimate the amount of calories consumed for each meal.

Prom Fashion Show
One of the highlights of fashion design or sewing class can be a fashion show. Fashion design students put on an annual show calling formal wear companies to borrow dresses and tuxes, as well as local hair and makeup salons for their services. Other groups like culinary or hospitality can get involved by selling food. Teachers can even be invited to wear their old prom dresses!
