Fancy Dessert Collages

It’s been my experience that most students love desserts! Fancy Dessert Collages is a project where students can learn about many different types of fancy desserts as they create and share information around an assigned or chosen dessert! As the teacher, you can decide, whether you want to run a “Fancy Dessert Challenge” for students to try their hand at preparing different desserts or just offer up a lab or two around a select few desserts. Either way, your students will get to experience fancy desserts in a variety of ways.

Marshmallow Peep Coop: STEM Design Challenge

Recently, I saw a kit for a Peep Cookie Coop and it made think that this could be a great STEM challenge for students in the spring of the year, similar to the

One of my favorite “issue” topics to teach about is food waste. Too much of our hard earned dollars are spent on food and feeding our families for it to end up in the garbage! $10 Meal Challenge Project

Beth Beattie, of Missouri, shares this $10 Meal Challenge Project inspired by the Iowa State Fair! During this past year, her sons were mesmerized by the Iowa State University Extension office’s $10 meal challenge offered to all 4-H members. This project is Beth’s reinterpretation of it. Charcuterie Board Virtual Challenge

Charcuterie boards seem to be all the rage, trending as a creative way to display everything from appetizers to desserts! With the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, I thought it would be a great time to introduce this concept and the Charcuterie Board Virtual Challenge to my students. Because of teaching in a hybrid setting, I made this a virtual activity and can’t wait to see what my students create! So, I will leave you with the same question I will my students, “What’s on your board?”

Hunger Awareness Project

Optimistic, enthusiastic and passionate are three adjectives I would use to describe Marybeth Motasem, a FACS teacher from Ohio. Equally impressive is her Hunger Awareness Project and willingness to share! Inspired by a response she received to a writing prompt and the pandemic, the hunger awareness project was born.

The English Muffin Challenge

The English Muffin Challenge was a spur of the moment lab! One of our school clubs had two packages of English Muffins left over from an event that they generously donated to us. In addition, I had several left over ingredients from some other labs that I didn’t want to waste. So, I threw it all together for a challenge lab! Students had 40 minutes to create an aesthetic, edible product using the English Muffin and following the parameters of the challenge. Overall, the results were successful, albeit some interesting! However, students walked away knowing they could put together a filling dish, using only available leftovers. The beauty of this type of lab is that the challenge and follow-up assignment could revolve around any food you have an abundance of and wish to use up!
