If you teach a finance class, you most likely teach about money management and investing. Warren Buffet has often been touted as the greatest investor of all due to his success over the years especially with his approach to investing. With that being said, I put together this Warren Buffet Quote Assignment that not only introduces students to him, but puts them in his shoes to decide if he would approve of real world financial behaviors and decisions.
Set
- Play the Who Am I? game with 5 Clues to introduce students to the greatest investor of all time. See clues below, under attachments. If you’re not familiar with how to play the game, check out this post for instructions.
- To help students learn more, show them the YouTube video titled, Warren Buffet The Most Successful Investor . If you want to have students stay focused, have them complete the corresponding questions as they view.
Materials
- iPads or Laptops
- Projector & Screen
- Highlighters
- Post-It-Note in Various Colors
Activities
- As the video eluded, Warren Buffet is known for his quotes and analogies. Introduce students to the Quote Activity.
- Give students 10 of Warren Buffet’s famous quotes and have them read, categorize and annotate them by color based on the following categories: RISK, VALUE, PATIENCE, HUMAN BEHAVIOR, AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT/SOCIETY.
- After students have sorted and annotated the quotes into categories, they are to select one quote per category to explain why they believe it fits there and share with the class.
- Once students have shared their quote explanations, it’s time to have them put themselves in Warren Buffet’s shoes.
- They read each of the scenarios and decide whether Warren Buffett would approve or disapprove of the decision. Then, cite the Buffett quote that best supports their answer, explaining why.
- To conclude the lesson/activity, give each student a post-it-note and have them write their name and response to the following prompt: “What’s one lesson you’ll take from Warren Buffett into your future financial life?” Collect post-it-notes as students exit the room at the end of the period. If you are teaching this lesson to multiple periods, you might consider color-coding your post-it-notes by class or period.
