After noticing continuous requests for lab suggestions that are doable in 43 minute class periods, I’ve decided to do a recurring series, featuring recipes that can be completed from beginning to end in a 43 minute time frame. In some cases, longer recipes will broken into two day labs. In addition, I will include my pre-lab review questions that pertain specifically to the recipe. This helps to ensure that students are reading the recipe. It also allows me time to show any videos that may demonstrate the product or specific techniques. So, without further ado, I present the 43 Minute Lab Series: Blueberry Pancakes!
- In the class that I use this recipe, we cover the nutrients and food groups, so this would be an example of a food that is high in carbohydrates and belongs in the grain group on MyPlate.
- After students have been taught about Carbohydrates via the Carbohydrate PPT, they complete a follow-up review activity which was created by Charity Strauch of Missouri (see attachments).
- Review the differences between complex and simple carbohydrates with this YouTube video titled, Complex Carbs vs Simple Carbs.
- I don’t cover the functions of ingredients or the importance of breakfast in the class I use this recipe in, but you could include it here if it helps you to meet standards.
- I love to use Alton Brown videos when I can and his Flap Jack Do It Again episode (affiliate link) is the perfect fit for this lesson and lab. There is a video guide sheet included below if you like to keep your students engaged during videos.
- Next, I give students the Pre-Lab Questions to answer. Some of the questions review what we’ve learned in class while others allow me to see what they know and cover the material on-the-spot if needed.
- Finally, it’s lab time and students prepare and enjoy their own pancakes–Alton Brown style!
