Healthy Home Environment Lesson Plan

A FACS teacher reached out about helping her create a lesson for a healthy home environment. After brainstorming some ideas, the Healthy Home Environment Lesson Plan was created. Maybe it will be helpful for one of your classes too!

Set

  • Ask students the following as a bell ringer: What are three things that make a home feel “healthy” to you? As students share, create a master list on the board.
  • Explain that families are the foundation of our lives, and the environment at home plays a huge role in shaping health, happiness, and development. There are at least 8 Key Elements that make up a healthy home. See how the students list compares to the actual. (List can be found in the presentation project).
  • Place students inn small groups and assign each group to a key element around specific info with a guide sheet for paper slides. Groups must present these to the class who will take notes on it. Here’s a tutorial on the Paper Slides if you need it to show your students. NOTE: If you dont wish to do notes via paper slides, then simply have students create them in Canva or Google Slides…it’s easily adaptable.

Materials

  • iPads or Laptops
  • Projector & Screen
  • Bags for Assessment
  • Index Cards
  • Old Magazines
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Glitter & Paint (optional)

Activities

  • After students have shared their presentations and taken notes on all of the elements, it’s time to practice and apply the information they just learned. Do this by setting up your room with scenarios for them to determine the key element being described.
  • You will need to cut apart the scenarios and randomly set them up around your room or the hallway. Students are given a form to fill in their answers and may use their notes as they circulate the room to figure out the answers. As always, teachers, if you need the key for this, just email me at kim@familyconsumersciences.com and I’ll send it your way!
  • After students have made the rounds and have their answers, go over each scenario to see how they did.
  • The final assessment for the lesson comes in one of my favorite activities, Healthy Home Elements in a Bag.
  • Place students into small groups of 2-3. Each group will complete the prompts and activities, placing everything in their “bag” to show they fully understand the key elements to a healthy home environment.
  • Grade the bags using the provided rubric and consider sharing one great example from each bag with the class.
