Financial Advice Dilemma

Give students a Financial Advice Dilemma to practice and apply their critical thinking skills as well as their decision making skills! With all of the financial advise options available, students need to understand what they are all about as well as their pros and cons. So, use this activity as part of your decision making unit, as a stand alone extension activity or as a sub plan. Regardless of when or how you use it, students will have to put on their thinking caps!

Set

  • Ask students to imagine they are 22, have their first real job, and want to start investing. They walk into a room with three doors. Behind each door is a different way to invest their money. Door #1: Do everything yourself. Door #2: Let an AI build your portfolio. Door #3: Work with a human advisor.
  • Ask students which option feels right to you and why? Quickly survey students and get their reasons. Keep a tally on the board.
  • Use this little scenario with this web-resource titled, “DIY Investing vs Rorbo-Advisor vs Financial Advisors: Pros and Cons” from Ryse to introduce the actual assignment.

Materials

  • iPads or Laptops
  • Article in Printed or Digital Form

Directions

  • Pass out the Financial Advise Dilemma and have students follow along as you read the scenario and go over the instructions and steps.
  • Give students the remainder of class to work through the article, steps, prompts and charts before making their final decision.
  • Conclude and explain that no one should ever make a decision on one source, no matter now reliable! Have them do a little research to find additional resources to support the information they uncovered. They are to locate three additional resources and cite them by title and hyperlink to the document. Additionally, they are to briefly explain how the new resource infomation relates to the information found in the original article.
  • After students have completed the dilemma and made their recommendation, survey them to see which choice they made and how the numbers compare to the original tally taken at the begining of the assignment. Discuss how and why they may have changed.
