During COVID-19, April Dull of Pennsylvania presented a webinar: “Using Canva to Inspire Students to Think and Express Themselves Creatively”. After participating in her presentation where the cross stitch unit was introduced, I knew I had to feature April on the website! Read on to see how a cross stitch unit was taught virtually to her students. While this unit was taught E-learning style, it can be used within a traditional or blended classroom.
When teaching about the importance of saving money at an early age, many students don’t see the value in it at this stage of their lives. They think because they are teens they’ve got plenty of time to build their savings account and investment portfolio and it’s not something their inclined to do or worry about as young adults. This lesson introduces students to several “Inflation & Savings Scenarios” showing students the value of saving over time using a variety of investments from safe to higher risk.
After noticing continuous requests for lab suggestions that are doable in 43 minute class periods, I’ve decided to do a recurring series featuring recipes that can be completed from beginning to end in a 43 minute time frame. In addition, I will include my pre-lab review questions that pertain specifically to the recipe. This helps to ensure that students are reading the recipe. It also allows me time to show any videos that may demonstrate the product or specific techniques. So, without further ado, I present the first recipe in the 43 Minute Lab Series: Mini-Cheesy Garlic Bread!
There are tons of articles about including and promoting STEM to our students. I decided to add this “STEM: Role Models & Activities” lesson and project into my child development class. I want my students to not only understand what STEM is, but why it’s important to expose and encourage it with young children.
Under normal teaching conditions, I teach my mini-unit on vegetarianism in a completely different way! Having to teach remotely, however, forced me to develop the KWL Vegetarianism E-Learning activity in order to cover the material. Students learn about various types of vegetarians, explore reasons people choose to become vegetarian along with the pros and cons and then students must take a stance. The Friendship lesson can be taught as an E-Learning assignment, but also would be a great addition to the traditional classroom if you teach about healthy interpersonal relationships. As the end of the school year draws near, I thought it appropriate to assign this distance learning activity titled, My Life in Song to my Individual & Family Studies classes. My Life in Song is a reflection activity that asks students to sum up their life in a minimum of 5 songs similar to how James Taylor did in a recent Parade Magazine interview. As with many of my recent assignments, this can be an E-learning activity as well as a traditional classroom assignment.
Since no one is quite sure what the next school year will look like, I’ve been working on updating some of my lessons for remote learning…just in case! This Kitchen Tools E-Learning Assignment comes to you early as I had a teacher request for some engaging ways to teach kitchen tools remotely. Not only can this Kitchen Tools E-Learning assignment be used in remote learning, but could also be used in the regular classroom.
