Micro-Enterprise Curriculum & Fundraiser Option

Interested in an engaging curriculum that combines a shoe drive fundraiser with micro-enterprise and f2ocurriculum_displayimage-1business? Wayne Elsey, Founder & CEO, of Funds2Orgs is sharing a full curriculum that has been aligned with Common Core for elementary, middle school, high school, and home school levels. The curriculum is an innovative approach that can be taught alone or be combined with a shoe drive fundraiser to understand the totality of the role of shoes in commerce and the environment.

Background Information

Wayne is a social entrepreneur who first got involved in social good after the Indian Ocean tsunami. At the time he was the president of a shoe manufacturing company. He led the effort to ship hundreds of thousands of shoes to people affected by the tsunami who had lost everything. He then did the same thing when Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti occurred. Through a nonprofit he founded, he shipped over 17 million pairs of shoes overseas.

During those years, he learned a lot about the need of families in developing countries. He firmly believes in providing people with a hand-up. And, as a dad who had to sell candy, etc, he developed Funds2Orgs, which is a for-profit social enterprise that accomplishes three goals:

  • 1) It helps groups and people in the U.S. raise money without ever having to ask for money or sell candy. They collect gently worn, used and new shoes and Funds2Orgs issues a check for the shoes.
  • 2) The shoes collected are shipped around the world to developing nations and micro-entrepreneurs (small business owners) who re-purpose the shoes and sell them in their own communities for a profit.
  • 3) Since each year in the U.S. alone over 600 million shoes are thrown into landfills, a shoe drive fundraiser helps prevent shoes from being disposed of in landfills where they can take up to 80 or 100 years to disintegrate. The chemical compounds in shoes are toxic and as they disintegrate, they also emit toxins into the air – hence a higher incidence respiratory diseases for communities that live close to landfills.
